Do you ever wonder what being the repentant thief on the cross was like? I think about him often. Although we don't know much about him, we do know that he lived a life of reckless sin. In his final moments, he recognized Jesus as the true Messiah and made a simple request—not selfish, but a truly humble plea. He asked to be merely a memory in paradise; he understood that he was not worthy of entering the Kingdom of Paradise. However, he humbled himself and demonstrated enough faith to ask, "Remember me when you're in paradise." Most of us know how this story ends: the sinner becomes the first human to be saved by grace and steps into paradise. The penitent thief is one of the most notorious characters in the gospel, yet not much is known about him. This short story, which I call a "love" story, is a fictional portrayal of these characters whose life stories are not as well-known but whose existence is vital to the overall gospel narrative of salvation. I invite you to join me in experiencing this tale of redemption, salvation, and reconciliation through the eyes of one of our thieves in my first short story in a series of three, "Dismas and the Tree."
